There is one place in Fiji that definitely tells the tales of the turbulent times our ancestors had to live through. Located in the interior of Nadroga, the Tavuni Hill Fort is clear evidence of the fierce tribal wars that were fought in the name of Fijian beliefs and against Christianity.
We operate private tours to Tavuni Hill Fort which is one of the most untainted, raw and intimate archeological sites to visit. The remains of an ancient Fiji-Tongan hill fort, situated 4km from Sigatoka Town. The fort was impenetrable as it was surrounded by high rock walls, protected by booby traps, ring ditches and a barricade of thorny trees. The Fort is clear evidence of the fierce tribal wars that were fought in the name of Fijian beliefs and against Christianity
Settled in the 1800s, tribes found refuge in the highly fortified settlement from the wars that thrived throughout the country and it got significant recognition when it was settled by Tongan Chief, Maile Latamai, who fled from his island after a dispute with the reigning chiefly family of Tui Pelenaki.
While the chief did not stay at the fort for long as wars raged on, forcing him to move constantly, his followers made the fort their home.
